## Overview

Each Robot can use its own number of recent messages plus a rolling summary of earlier content. You can also decide what happens to that context when human service ends or reset it only for the open conversation.

Resetting context does not delete the visible transcript, contact, CRM records, knowledge-base sources, or shared long-term memory about the contact.

## Prerequisites

- A Robot created in Maestro.
- Administrator permission to change Robot settings.
- For an ordinary agent to reset context, an administrator must enable that permission on the Robot.

## Step by step

1. Go to **Settings → Robots** and open the required Robot.
2. Under **Conversation and context**, set **Recent messages in context** between 20 and 2,000. With no custom value, the effective default is 200.
3. Under **Human takeover**, choose how context returns: preserve, reset, or ask on resume.
4. If you choose ask and automatic resume is enabled, select the timer fallback: stay paused, preserve, or reset.
5. If needed, enable **Allow agents to reset context** and save the Robot.
6. To reset a conversation, open it, expand the Maestro panel, select **Reset context**, and confirm. Administrators can also use the compact action in the conversation header.

## Settings & options

| Option | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Recent messages | Keeps up to the exact limit of newest meaningful messages. Earlier content is folded into the rolling summary. |
| Preserve on resume | The Robot continues with the context from before human service. |
| Reset on resume | Context is reset before the Robot starts answering again. |
| Ask on resume | Manual resume requires a preserve-or-reset choice. |
| Stay paused | When the timer expires, the conversation waits for a human decision. |
| Agent permission | Grants only context reset to agents who can already open the conversation. Administrators can always reset. |

Contact messages, public replies, private notes, and activities with content count when they produce information for the model. Empty items and the reset operation's own automatic audit note are excluded.

Resume policies are snapshotted when the pause begins. Changing the Robot later affects the next pause, not a conversation that is already paused.

## Use cases

- Close an old topic and start a new request in the same conversation.
- Prevent guidance from a human service period from influencing the next automation.
- Keep more history for consultative sales and less for objective triage.
- Require a supervisor decision before returning a sensitive conversation to the Robot.

## Tips, limits & best practices

- Start with 200 messages. Larger limits increase reading, latency, and cost even with summarization.
- Reset cancels pending approvals and messages retained during pause only for that conversation.
- An active conversation stays active; a paused conversation stays paused. The Robot uses the new context on the next eligible message.
- The system writes a private audit note with the actor and canceled counts. That note is not sent back to the model.
- Confirmation is required, and retries of the same attempt are handled idempotently.

## Troubleshooting

### The agent cannot see the reset action

Confirm that the agent can open the conversation and that **Allow agents to reset context** is enabled on the effective Robot. Administrators keep the action even when no Robot is currently bound.

### The conversation did not resume automatically

If the policy is **Ask** with **Stay paused**, this is expected. Open the panel and choose preserve or reset when resuming.

### Old messages are still visible

This is expected. Reset creates a boundary for Robot memory; it does not remove the human-readable transcript.

### Images in later questions

With image understanding enabled, the Robot retrieves recent images together with their captions for later questions, including after history compaction or a service restart. Up to six image messages can serve as references; images in the current input take priority within the Robot's analysis limit.

Retrieval checks the original attachment again. If it changed, analysis uses its current version; if it was removed or is unavailable, the Robot must not invent visual details and may request another upload. Disabling image understanding also prevents analysis of images from the previous context. Resetting context removes references before the chosen boundary while preserving the visible transcript.
